Downtown Talent: Grace Weber

Every issue the editors at Downtown Magazine choose one of the city’s thousands of talented denizens to highlight and share with its readers.  For this fall’s issue the editors decided to dedicate a couple of pages to introduce you to Grace Weber, an impressive young singer and songwriter from Wisconsin who has for the past several years called Brooklyn her home. Catherine and I met with Grace and her publicist from Shore Fire Media, at her Williamsburg apartment which she shares with her two inquisitive cats for a brief interview and portrait session.

If you feel like you might have been hearing that name a lot recently you’d be right.  Earlier this fall she was featured on Refinery 29 and Lucky Magazine’s new musician roundup.  All this attention comes for a very good reason, her lyrics are insightful and her voice is soulful; and what a voice.  With Otis Redding on vinyl as background she spoke about her new album, The Refinery, which she wrote in part as a coping mechanism to a quarter life crisis (don’t look at me like that it’s totally a thing).  In this new album she explores and bares a darker and more complex side of her personality as she grows more confidently into herself.Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

The shoot itself was a fairly low-key affair during which we spoke not only about her album and the evolution of her music but the ways in which music touches us.  She felt that this relationship gives her an interesting opportunity as a storyteller to create for her listeners something that is equally personal to her in the writing and performing of it, as to them as individual songs potentially enter into the curated soundtrack to specific moments in their lives.

The Refinery dropped October 7th so, if you haven’t already done so, please run out and pick it up or check iTunes for her full discography.  Before I leave you to the full enjoyment of her incredible voice, here’s a look at our afternoon working together.
