Charley 5.0 Lookbook

I was first introduced to Charley 5.0 towards the beginning of the year, I had seen some of their past collection and I was always interested in the chance to work with them. Towards the end of the summer as we were approaching lookbook season I gave them another call. They asked to see my work and before I knew it we were planning the shoot. The plan was to shoot on location at the Jersey Shore, the weekend after the hurricane. While the hurricane didn’t have much of an effect on New York City, Jersey was a different matter, and there was some worry that the beach house where we were shooting could have suffered serious damage or the beach could have washed away, so for that weekend there was some serious worry about what the week would bring.

Luckily there was no lasting damage and at 6am we left Time Square and by 7 I had my feet in the Atlantic, “scouting” the area. Shooting on the beach the Thursday before a holiday weekend provided some interesting challenges, not the least of which was yet another awesome sunburn. But at the end of the day I am proud of the work I did and the fantastic crew that I had the pleasure to work with.

My first experience with Timo Weiland was when I was assigned to shoot their first spring collection, allmost two years ago ow. I was incredibly impressed by the quality of the designs and prints. Since that first show I’ve been an admirer of the line and and have enjoyed watching its progression. Earlier this year I was assigned to cover their Fall 2011 presentation at Lincoln Center and was blown away by the maturity of the collection. This was, in my opinion, a huge step forward for the line in terms of the sophistication, romance, and luxury of the designs. I attended the show with Seth Friedermann, my managing editor, and we turned to each other almost simultaneously with the desire to do something more, some sort of photo editorial or designer feature showcasing this new collection.

A few months later we both got our wish. This shoot went through several different manefestations as concepts were proposed, reveiwed, tossed out, edited, re-proposed, etc., until we found something that was the right fit. The conceptual groundwork for this shoot was to show how we live in a world of restraint even though what we crave is the freedom to indulge in wild abandon.

I was first introduced to Jolibe was about a year ago at New York Fashion Week when I was sent to photograph the CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) open house/designer presentations. I was so impressed by that collection, it’s fluidity and sophistication, and effortlessness. I was instantly hooked. And as it turns out so was my managing editor Seth Friedermann, who already had a longstanding fashion crush on the line and it’s designers Joel Diaz and Christina LaPenz. After that initial show we talked about the presentation and agreed on a mutual desire to do something more with them in the future. It took roughly a year of emails and scheduling issues, but the chance finally came to do a designer feature and we lept at it. When I first saw the Fall 2011 collection during the presentation I wasn’t quite sure what I was looking at at the time. The presentation did not contain the entire collection and I have to admit that back in February it did not have the same effect on me as the previous collection. It turns out that I could not have been more wrong. When the day of the shoot came and Seth and I did our usual pre-shoot walk through of the clothes and the styling direction I was able to really examine the clothes for the first time. And they are exquisite. The weight and feel of the fabrics, the quality of the construction, all the details and life of the line require contact, this is not a line that is made to look good on the hanger, this is a line that wants to be worn, to move and to come to life.

Claire Marshall was my hair and makeup artist/therapist/enabler of change/DJ on this shoot, and our model is the lovely Lara from Fenton Moon. Lara has a physicality that I had not seen in other younger models, and she seemed to transform into different characters with each outfit change and the music, she seemed to channel something beyond herself, which was a fascinating experience, watching the character evolve and shift in front of me. Brooke Tassoul Fall/Holiday 2011 Campaign Shoot

One of my favorite things about this job is the opportunity to build relationships with my clients. On the one hand it makes my job significantly easier when we have a standing relationship and I am aware of the specific needs and issues of the client. I know how they prefer to work and how they handle different issues and challenges, I have the opportunity to learn what they expect and what they are hoping for. My favorite part is watching them evolve as designers and working with them to create images that help to reflect, support, and best represent that evolution.
This Fall 2011 collection from Brooke Tassoul is one of those collections. As always there’s the joy of shooting with friends, Brooke (designer), Lucy Sutherland Knaus (stylist and keeper of the sanity), and Alexa Hodgin (our super talented hair and makeup artist) reunited for this shoot, and as usual it was more play than work, at least that’s how it felt. But this is also an important collection because of what a departure it was for Brooke from her previous collections. The general approach was the same, but this season was more daring and, while concise, I think it is the beginning of an exciting new direction for her. I wanted to support this new direction for the line with a bit of a departure photographically as well. Previous collections have been more romantic, but this season was different, more 80′s influences, a little cheekier, and I wanted to use the images to help highlight that shift. So here’s a set of my favorites from Part 2. This was a complete accident by the way. The intention was to do the entire shoot on the High Line. And then, beyond the cold, it began to rain. And thousands of dollars of incredible silk garments in the wind and rain of the West Side Highway is a dangerous thought.

The focus of this feature was an incredible Chinese brand that does some of the most incredible silk work that I have ever seen, Blanc de Chine. Saffron Rare Threads Spring 2011

I was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, and I will always have a soft spot for the wonderful City by the Bay, but one thing I had never really planned on was the chance to work in this stunning city. I left home to study photography and business in Ohio and Italy, and then picked up and moved to New York to follow my dream of being a photographer, but even after all of that I never expected that I would be lucky enough to have clients in my hometown.

When I made the move last fall to go out on my own I started considering the possibility of exploring business options on both coasts, but I wasn’t completely convinced that there would be any potential clients to support that decision. However I was proven wrong when I decided to attend a couple of the apparel shows and was introduced to several San Francisco designers that were creating beautiful work. This discovery prompted me to begin exploring and eventually actively searching for new Northern California designers, and it was in this frame of mind that I found Saffron Rare Threads.

Saffron Rare Threads is a San Francisco based (designed and produced) line masterminded by Priya Saraswati, a former investment banker from Toronto, who now designs this incredible line out of the back room of her multi-line, Embarcadero One boutique. Her line is intelligent, classy, and extremely sexy. I remember looking at her website the first time and getting excited at the possibilities of how I would photograph her designs . Working with her on this project and along side her during production was eye opening not only to learn about how she became involved in fashion but also hear about her plans for the line and the direction that she is moving in as she continues to evolve. Working in a visual candy store is also a side perk.

A few months after our initial meeting I got the call to submit an estimate and when the email came in saying that it had been accepted I was over the moon. I did most of the production from New York, but ran into issues finding a suitable location. When I arrived we fleshed out ideas for the location and the more I asked around the further we seemed to be from what we were hoping for, until we discovered the Steinhart Hotel. The Steinhart was the “guest house” and personal appartment of Ignatz Steinhart (1836 – 1917), the banker and entrepreur who is also know as the benefactor to San Francisco’s Steinhart Aquarium. The building was completed in 1910 and is a magnificently luxurious building with fantastic character.

Included here are some of my favorite images from this shoot. I would like to take a moment to thank the staff of the Steinhart and Personality Hotels for being so kind, helpful, and accomodating to us throughout the shooting day and the entire planning process. I would also like to thank the staff of Saffron Rare Threads, as Priya allowed me to borrow one of her assistants at points during the shoot and for allowing me to excicute the final production touches in the boutique’s back room. Another huge thank you goes out to our wonderful model, Ashley Jones (JE Models) and our incredible hair and makeup artist Tyress, they were troopers, consumate professionals and in general and all around joy to work with. They were all instrumental to making this shoot and it was a pleasure to have the chance to work with them. So please if you are ever wandering around downtown San Francisco, take a moment and wander into Saffron Rare Threads, I promise you won’t be dissappointed.

Follow Your Dreams – Feature Editorial in Raine Magazine Spring 2011, The Hollywood Issue

Last fall I answered an ad on Craigslist that was looking for potential photographers to contribute to RAINE Magazine. I sent my letter off and didn’t think anything more of it, until i received a phone call a few weeks later from the editor of the magazine. To my surprise not only was she interested in having me submit stories for the magazine, but also in combining that editorial with a feature story on me as well. The story was published in the Hollywood Issue. Here’s a look at the shoot as it appears in the magazine which is currently on newsstands. I’d like to give a huge thank you to Brian Daigle, our amazing hairstylist; Sarah Jane Sheehy, our incredible makeup artist; and Katia (Basic Model Management), one of the sweetest models I’ve ever worked with, for all of their fantastic work and talent. They were a pleasure to work with and I was thrilled to have them on board.

Welcome to Portfolio Hell, Take it as a Learning Experience

I have a confession. This past November was the first time that I have updated my printed book since I was a senior in college. NOT GOOD.

My website has been up and running and almost constantly updated in the meantime, but a website and a book are slightly different animals. Websites offer a bit more leniency with regards to subject matter and space. Unlimited portfolios and images are by no means free on the internet, but neither do they weigh 50 pounds and require patience and grace while inflicting back pain when running back and forth across town between interviews and go-sees. At the same time there is something about the sheer visual quality of high-end physical prints that the web has yet to replicate.

But a debate on the merit of web-based portfolios vs. physical portfolios is not one that I want to get into here.

What I discovered rather harshly over the past couple of months and am still battling with is the use of the portfolio as an unforgiving but invaluable educational tool. Arguably the main purpose of a portfolio is to showcase, in the best possible light, your best work. This is the collection of images that will help both attract interest, as well as convince potential clients that you are the correct choice for their project. It is as much a presentation of your past successes as it is an instrument for securing future clients and commissions. That’s not exactly news to anyone, and if it is you have some catching up to do.

“I looked at everything I had done since I started working. It was a revelation. For one thing, I had no idea that I had accumulated so many photographs. You lose track of them when you’re working every day. And you see the work in a different way when you look at it from the distance of time. You get a sense of where you are going. You start to see a life. Looking at the body of work gave me the impetus to go on.”

What I am actually talking about is seeing the overall direction of your work. What kind of photographer are you now and what type of photographer are you developing into? How does that differ with the direction that you initially hoped for? Looking at your work as a massive whole allows you to see the various trends, both good and bad, that are emerging and influencing your work. Personally, even though this was a concept that I understood in theory, the reality was a bit of a shocking experience. Yes I am proud of the work I’ve done; however, being the overly critical perfectionist that I am, I also recognize areas of strength and weakness, trends to avoid, ideas to further cultivate, directions where I need to challenge myself to create greater things, etc. These are all things that I would never have noticed or understood before I went through the editing process for the latest version of the portfolio. It doesn’t matter how often you shoot or how amazing the images are, keeping things piecemeal in your head or computer will never offer you the chance at growth that compiling a complete portfolio will do. There is no arguing with the facts, and when all your images are sitting there on your floor, or bed, or computer screen, the only thing to do is to organize them, take them seriously, strip away the weak and try to learn something from what the remaining images say about you. It’s arduous, frustrating, and daunting, but completely worth it.

Suzanne Sease and Amanda Sosa Stone are former art buyers and reps and offer some fantastic advice.
